Mistakes Shape Us, They Don't Define Us

Updated: Oct 6, 2024

As a nurse, I’ve experienced the intense pressure that comes with caring for patients, especially in the fast-paced environment of an emergency room. Like many of my colleagues, I’ve made mistakes, and I’ve seen firsthand the emotional toll it takes. In healthcare, even the smallest error can feel devastating, and it’s hard not to carry that guilt. We rarely forgive ourselves for these mistakes, and over time, that guilt builds up, weighing heavily on our emotional and mental health.

I’ve been there. I know what it’s like to go home after a shift, replaying every detail, wondering if I could have done something differently. It took me a long time to realize that those mistakes don’t define me. But the journey to forgiveness is not an easy one, and it’s something many healthcare workers struggle with. We’re often our own harshest critics, unable to show ourselves the same compassion we extend to our patients.

That’s why I’m so passionate about changing the way we approach self-care in healthcare. I believe that through journal writing, meditation, and self-reflection, we can begin to process those mistakes, understand the lessons, and ultimately, learn to forgive ourselves. Journaling has been a transformative practice for me. It provides a safe, private space to express my feelings, release the guilt, and work through the emotions tied to patient care. Guided meditation has helped me calm my mind, reduce stress, and create a mental space for healing.

I’m driven to share these tools with other healthcare workers because I know how important it is to prioritize our own emotional well-being. We spend so much of our time caring for others, but we need to care for ourselves, too. I’ve created journals, guided imagery videos, and self-care resources to help others find the same peace and clarity that these practices have brought me.

Mistakes don’t define who we are. They are opportunities for growth, and through self-compassion, we can move forward stronger and more resilient. My goal is to support my fellow healthcare workers on this journey of healing, reminding them that they are more than their mistakes and that self-care isn’t a luxury—it’s essential.
