Working as a nurse in the emergency room of a busy New York hospital means constantly being on the go. Shifts are long, emotions run high, and finding moments to relax is rare. That’s why, after over six months without a real break, when my friends suggested a girls’ night out, I was all in. It was exactly what I needed: a few hours away from the madness, catching up with friends over good coffee, and just letting loose.
We decided to meet at this cute little coffee shop just outside the city. It had a charming, rustic vibe with cozy outdoor seating and live music every Friday night in the fall. The café wasn’t just any ordinary spot—it was known for its laid-back atmosphere and delicious coffee. The perfect place to unwind.
Among our group was Lola, one of my closest friends. Lola’s Latin American accent always added a unique flair to her speech, and it became an endearing part of her personality that we lovingly teased her about. She embraced it, laughing right along with us, which made it all the more fun.
As we were deciding on our orders, the café grew louder with chatter, the clinking of mugs, and the band tuning up their instruments. Our server came over to take our coffee orders, and Lola, sitting closest to her, turned to ask her name. The server replied, but with all the noise, it was hard to hear.
“I think she said her name is Maggie,” Lola whispered to us. But, of course, with Lola’s charming accent, it came out as "Maki."
We smiled, but the moment passed quickly as we placed our orders. A few minutes later, as the server walked away, Lola raised her hand and called out confidently, “Maki!” The server turned around, nodded, and went on her way.
We didn’t think much of it until a little while later, the server returned with all our drinks. But instead of just dropping off the coffees, she placed a perfectly crafted macchiato in front of Lola.
Lola stared at it, blinking in confusion. “I didn’t order this,” she said, turning to us with a bewildered look. That’s when it hit us.
“Oh my god,” I laughed. “She thought you were ordering a macchiato, not calling her by name!”
And just like that, we burst into laughter, the kind of deep, uncontrollable laughter that leaves you breathless and with tears streaming down your face. Lola was a good sport about it, but the look on her face when the macchiato arrived was priceless. It was one of those moments that none of us could have predicted, but it became an instant inside joke.
As the night wound down and we said our goodbyes, I couldn’t stop thinking about how important these moments are—the times when life surprises us with joy, even in the simplest of ways. I thought about how that night, filled with laughter, love, and good friends, was something I wanted to hold onto. And what better way to remember that night than to create a journal?
That’s when the idea for Macchiato Nights Daily Journal came to life. A journal that would capture the spirit of those spontaneous, unforgettable moments with friends—the kind that bring laughter and joy, even when things don’t go as planned. I imagined a space where people could reflect on their own “Macchiato moments,” jotting down the small, unplanned joys that make life richer.
Because if there’s anything I learned that night, it’s that laughter with friends is a gift, and sometimes, the best memories come from the things you didn’t expect—like accidentally ordering a macchiato.
And now, every time I sit down with my journal, I’m reminded of that fall evening, the sound of the band playing in the background, and the laughter we shared over a simple cup of coffee. Macchiato Nights became more than just a journal idea—it became a way to remember that joy, no matter how busy life gets.
